Quake Leaves More Than 70,000 Without Power, with Two Deaths and Over a Dozen Injured

After Tuesday mornings strong 6.4 earthquake just under 10 miles off the northern California coast near Ferndale, most of the 70,000 Pacific Gas and Electric customers with out power for most of the day, were reporting power restoration late Tuesday afternoon.  

The quake, striking just after 2:30am early Tuesday morning, forced Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal to declare a Local Emergency as a result of widespread damages sustained throughout Humboldt County from the initial quake, and subsequent aftershocks that still continue.  

The Office of Emergency Services immediately began interacting with local, regional and state emergency partners to coordinate emergenccy response.  

More than a dozen people have been reported injured and two individuals have died as a result of medical emergencies stemming from the emergency situation.

Significant reports of structural damages to homes and businesses have been reported across the communities of Ferndale, Fortuna and Rio Dell.  

Damage from the tremor also closed many roads, most notably State Route 211 at Fernbridge, and traffic was delayed in many areas as bridges and overpasses were inspected for damage.
