Shooting Investigation Turns into a Homicide Investigation

Medford Police Detectives are currently investigating a shooting that occurred early Saturday morning at an apartment in the 800 Block of Ellendale Avenue. On January 27th at 1:37 AM, Medford Police Officers were dispatched to an assault with a weapon after receiving two 911 calls.

Medford Police Officers were on scene within minutes of the call. Upon arrival, Officers contacted four people inside the residence, including the victim. The victim, 39-year-old Thomas Peterson, who had been staying at the residence had sustained a gunshot wound to his head. The victim was transported by Mercy ambulance to a local hospital in critical condition.

Medford Police Detectives were called out to handle the investigation. The investigation showed that 23-year-old Cody Templeton was responsible for the shooting. The motive and the events leading up to the shooting are still being investigated.

39-year-old Thomas Peterson, the victim in the shooting investigation, has succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at a local hospital Saturday. The suspect in this investigation, 23-year-old Cody Templeton, is now being held at the Jackson County Jail for an additional charge of Murder with no bail. This case will be forwarded to the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.

Detectives believe three people had left the location prior to police arriving, and also believe these three individuals could be witnesses to the shooting. At approximately 10:00 AM detectives executed a search warrant at the residence. Evidence of drug activity occurring inside the residence when the shooting occurred was located.
