Sprinkler System Key to Containment of Fire in Canopy in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park

The canopy fire in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park first reported Monday afternoon August 15th, was reported to be 90% contained with all the fires having been extinguished thanks to the crew’s innovative sprinkler system according to information released August 20th.

The sprinkler system in the canopy has worked to douse the flames and put out the fire. Without this innovation these trees would need to be cut down in order to be extinguished.

A fully grown and mature redwood tree is naturally resistant to fire thanks to their 12-inch-thick bark that retains moisture and their lack of flammable pitch or resin. Since the fires have reportedly been extinguished, these trees may continue to grow for thousands of years.

One tree was reportedly still emitting smoke and the area will remained closed from Crescent City to Boy Scout Tree Trail, Howland Hill Rd. remains open on the Hiouchi side.
