Survey Vessel Capsizes on Sporthaven Beach

On Wednesday, April 25th, at approximately 11:00 am, authorities were alerted to a capsized boat in the surf at Sporthaven Beach in Brookings-Harbor Oregon.

According to one of the victims, a survey vessel from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was working close to the surf zone when a rogue wave pushed the boat into the beach area before another wave struck the boat as they maneuvered to retreat, flipping the boat and capsizing the vessel in the shallow water.

Two men were operating the vessel, later identified by the Curry County Sheriff as Marshall Tildon and William Stringer of Coos Bay, one escaped quickly while another was trapped inside the vessel for approximately 20 to 30 minutes before being extricated by Coast Guard personnel.

The Coast Guard was assisted by good Samaritan Dave Delonge, who with first responders used his personal vehicle with a winch to secure the vessel.

First responders were also assisted by Curry County Sheriff, Cal-Or, Brookings-Harbor harbor personnel, Harbor Fire Department personnel and Brookings Fire and Rescue.

These are preliminary reports and more details will be provided when available.
