Touchdowns and Cheering Crowds Highlight Bruin Football Association’s Flag Football Season Opener

Another season of Bruin Football Association’s flag football program kicked off and hit the ground running with a new program and the usual excitement of cheering crowds and touchdowns.

Bruin High School varsity football coach Shaun Bavaro and the Bruin Football Association’s flag football program, part of the USA Football organization and member of the NFL flag football program, has grown it into an exciting summertime experience enjoyed by over 100 local boys and girls annually.

Now in its 7th year, the Bruin Football Association brought growth to the program this season, changing the highest division to ‘Flex Football’. The Flex Football division brings some significant changes designed into the program to help players transition from flag football to tackle football.

The most notable change is the extra equipment involved with head protection and shoulder and chest protection. The transition from Flag Football to Flex Football also includes more players on the field, changing from the 5 on 5 of Flag, to 8 on 8 in Flex which allows for blocking schemes and play calling from both sides of the football.

So far, by the sounds on the sidelines, the Flex program is a great success as well as the other two lower divisions who continue to sign-up more kids consistently every year. “The Program continues to see new faces and our enrollment continues to increase.” coach Bavaro told the Compass. “So we’re very happy with that. It’s a great summer activity for our youth.”

Part of the success of the program should be attributed the Bruin Football Association’s ability to have some of same coaches continue to stay in the program for the last 4-5 years, helping drive competition, strategy and complexity of the game.

“We want the kids to have fun and compete at the same time.” coach Bavaro continued. “That’s our main objective, and the Flag and Flex football program’s are just one of the ways the Bruin Football Association can provide multiples entry points to the game of football to our local youth.”
