Two Men Arrested for Shooting After Botched Drug Deal

On Thursday, February 22nd, at around 6:00 AM, Medford Police responded to Providence Medical Center for the report of a subject with a gunshot wound. Upon arrival, officers contacted 33-year-old Justin Weathers, who had a single gunshot wound to his right arm. Detectives with the Medford Police Department responded and assumed the investigation.

The investigation revealed the shooting occurred after an attempted robbery of a subject during an illegal drug transaction. The investigation led detectives to a motel on Clover Lane in Ashland. During a search of the motel room detectives seized heroin and three firearms. Detectives were able to confirm one of the seized firearms was the one used in the shooting that occurred earlier that morning in Medford.

Detectives were able to identify and interview the subjects who were involved in the initial drug transaction in Ashland. During the investigation, detectives learned that Justin Weathers and 32 yr. old Cody Hanson had set up a drug deal for heroin in Ashland. The intent was to rob the subject of his heroin. During the robbery, Weathers attempted to use a stun gun on the subject. Weathers was also armed with a handgun during the robbery.

The subject with the heroin was also armed with a firearm and evaded the robbery. The subject fled the area and drove in heavy snow and ice to try and get away from Weathers and Hanson. Weathers and Hanson followed the subject into Medford where Weathers again menaced the subject and another passenger with a firearm. In an attempt to protect himself; the subject fired four to five rounds into Hanson’s vehicle. One of the rounds hit Weathers in the arm.

Detectives continued the investigation and determined that Weathers and Hanson were involved in a second robbery that occurred on Monday, February 19th at a motel room on Alba Drive in Medford. During the robbery in Medford, Weathers attempted to rob one of the victims of drugs and money while armed with a firearm. The subject being robbed was able to overtake Weathers and disarm him. This robbery was not initially reported to the police.

Weathers was arrested after being released from the hospital on 02/23/18 and lodged at the Jackson County Jail for the below listed charges. Hanson was taken into custody on 02/28/18 during a traffic stop in Eagle Point. Hanson was lodged at the Jackson County Jail for the below-listed charges.

32 yr. old transient Cody Chance Hanson is being held on Robbery First Degree, 3 counts of Robbery Second Degree, and 3 counts of Failure to Appear on Warrant.

33 yr. old transient Justin Dale Weathers is being held on First Degree Robbery and Second Degree Robbery.

The Medford Police Department was assisted by detectives from MADGE, deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.
