2 Sport Athlete Josh Smith next Brookings Les Schwab ‘Star Student Athlete’

Josh Smith and Les Schwab General Manager Bruce Ward

For future student athletes this weeks Les Schwab ‘Star Student Athlete’ Josh Smith, a two sport athlete participating in the BHHS Bruin football program as well as track and field, is an excellent example of how hard work, confidence and big goals can define what it takes to be successful.

Josh Smith was a captain in Coach Bavaro’s BHHS Bruin football program for two years playing guard on the offensive line and as an interior lineman on the defensive side of the line. “Josh was part of the core that really helped put toghether a solid foundation to build on as we move the football program forward.” Coach Bavaro said.

In the thankless position of lineman on a football team, Josh Smith was instrumental in the success of the Bruin offensive game plan both opening holes for the running game as well as protecting the quarterback for the passing attack.

On defense Josh was responsible for getting to the opposing quarterback and stopping the run to keep the Bruins in the game on their way to the post season two years in a row.

“Track always seemed like the sport I was waiting for” Josh told the Wild Coast Compass. “After football season ended I dedicated my time and effort to really make my senior year count in my three field events of Javelin, Shot put and Discus” he said.

Josh leaves his high school track and field career with big marks throwing a personal best 143 ft. 7 inches, in the javelin. His best mark in the shot-put was 43 ft. 6 inches and he threw the discus over 120 ft. before the Coronavirus pandemic ended all 2020 school sports spring seasons.

“Josh proved that he is a great teammate and has really left his mark in many ways that most people wouldn’t see” Coach Bavaro told the Wild Coast Compass. “His focus on details and his ability to interact with everybody that he comes in contact with is a valuable skill he demonstrated working with our next generation of upcoming BHHS lineman, and will help Josh be highly successful.” Coach Bavaro went on to say.

Josh will be continuing his academics and taking his talents on the gridiron and track and field to the College of the Redwoods this fall.

Congratulations Josh and good luck in all that you do.
