Altercation at Port of Brookings Leads to Stand-off and Arrest

Just before 12:40pm, Friday, March 11th, Curry County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 32 year old William Stringham of Brookings in the Port of Brookings Harbor following an altercation with Port of Brookings Harbor employees.

Reportedly, an employee from the Port of Brookings was head butted by Stringham during the original altercation, and when Deputies arrived on scene, Stringham then fled onto the commercial boat docks, and boarded a commercial fishing vessel.

During the standoff, deputies learned that there was a firearm on the vessel as Stringham continued to refuse to obey orders to exit from the vessel. Deputies then determined that Stringham had access to numerous items on the vessel that could be used as a dangerous or deadly weapon.

As Stringham continued to resist, Curry County Deputy K-9 Axel was deployed, and Stringham was subsequently taken to the deck of the boat by K-9 Axel. Stringham continued to resist and after a brief struggle with deputies, was taken into custody.

Stringham was taken to Curry General Hospital where his bite injuries were treated, and was then lodged in the Curry County Jail on charges of Harassment, Disorderly Conduct, Menacing and Resisting arrest.
