Another outstanding Brookings-Harbor High School student athlete has been chosen Barron’s ‘Star Student Athlete’ as local school sports programs begin to transition to winter sports. Student athletes are selected by their coach’s for their outstanding efforts in the sports arena, as well as their exemplary scholastic and community participation.

This weeks selection is a 4 year member on the Brookings-Harbor High School varsity football program, and has been selected for his consistent outstanding performances on the field for head Coach Shaun Bavaro, and has set the bar high both on and off the field for all athletes moving into the school year.

Talking with Coach Bavaro about his selection, he told the Compass “He played multiple positions on the field for us, putting 100% effort into all aspects of our program and our community.., Playing both running back and nose guard while being one of the smallest players on the team shows how big of a heart he has.” he said.

In the shortened Bruin football season, Mills had 25 carries at running back with over 100 yards on the ground for Coach Bavaro in just 3 games. Defensively, he had 20 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 tackles for a loss, and 1 fumble recovery in those 3 games.

Gavin Mills was also awarded the ‘The Bruin Excellence Award’ by Coach Bavaro for “his participation in all of our out of season activities.” coach Bavaro said. Mills spent his summer as a youth football referee and coach, while helping and run the Bruin Football Association summer flag football program.

He was also a camp coach for our Bruin Brother camps in the summer and would finish his his practices before running over to help our BFA rookie tackle practices, all while volunteering to help numerous families move in and out of our community and cleaning up local area parks.
