Brookings Flag Football Winding Down

Another week of flag football is in the books as they wind down to the final games of the Brookings Football Association’s flag football program summer season.

Coach Rusty White

Throughout the season, the Compass has featured one of the programs many coaches, and this week we introduce you to Coach Rusty White, the Defensive Coordinator for the Brookings-Harbor High School Football team, who shares what coaching at this level has brought to his coaching.

The Chargers quarterback Emmet Bradbury is under center Isaiah Brunson getting ready to hand-off to running back Mason Duncan

“I have coached flag football for the last 5-6 years, mostly with the middle-school age group,” White said, “but this year was my son’s first year playing so I coached a K-2 team. Not only has it been different, but it sure has been fun to see the game through the eyes of a 5-year-old.

Brody Bavaro and Henry Austin up for the reception.

The Brookings Football Association’s flag football program has been gaining in popularity every year, and it is giving our high school football program an opportunity to get local kids involved in the game at a younger age.

Amity Anderson breaks away from the pack after an interception.

It has also become a great opportunity to get our high school players out in the community interacting with local youth and giving back through their refereeing.

The Titans Justin Jones looking for extra yards.
Texans defenders Gentry Carpenter and Aero Hall look on as Kollin Kammeier and Preston McVay battle for the ball.

My favorite part of coaching this season has been taking a group of kids that don’t even know which way they are supposed to run, and seeing the progress that the kids have made as the season went on all while sharing the game I love with the next generation of football players.”
