Brookings K9 Officer ‘Hulk’ with Big Haul

On Monday evening, May 27, just after 10:30 pm, Brookings Police officers were dispatched to the Fred Meyer store for a report of a theft in progress. Officers were told that there were two suspects, one male, and one female, and both had fled on foot.

Officers located a large amount of Fred Meyer merchandise at the north end of the Pacific Wood Laminates building on Railroad Street. Officer Van Zelf deployed K9 Officer Hulk and began a search from the location of the found merchandise.

K9 Officer Hulk tracked the suspect from the location of the merchandise around the rear of the building where he located the male suspect hiding near the southwest corner. The suspect was taken into custody and found to be wearing some of the stolen merchandise. The suspect was identified as 33 year old William Rakestraw. After being positively identified by Fred Meyer employees, Rakestraw was charged with Theft I and Criminal Conspiracy.

The female suspect was also located by officers several blocks away. She was identified as 29 year old Skye McCovey. Officers learned that McCovey had an outstanding warrant for her arrest. After being positively identified by Fred Meyer employees, McCovey was arrested for her outstanding warrant and also charged with Theft I and Criminal Conspiracy.

All of the stolen merchandise was recovered and returned to Fred Meyer. It was determined that the total value of the stolen merchandise was $3,399.58.

Both suspects were lodged in the Curry County Jail.
