Bruin Boys Baseball Topple #2 Taft

Coach Keith Wallin has evidently got his ducks in a row as he took his #1 OSAA ranked Brookings-Harbor boys baseball team into the home of the #2 ranked Taft Tigers Saturday afternoon in a pre-season battle of State ranked heavyweights.

Freshman hurler Adam Shew took the mound for the Bruins and held the powerful Taft Tigers to just 4 runs.

But it was the Bruin offense that was on display Saturday as they had 12 hits, 8 walks, scoring 11 times while leaving ten stranded. As a team, the Bruins struck out only twice from 29 total at bats in the game.

The Bruin offense struck early in the second inning when sophomore Bruin catcher Jacob McCollum stepped up to the plate and let the league know who was #1 with a booming home-run to start the scoring. The Bruins continued to work in the second, junior outfielder Manny Zamora, who would score three times in the contest, worked the count for a walk and would later cross the plate off of a sophomore Peyton Armentrout line drive single on a 3-2 count to the center fielder.

Taft scored three runs in the sixth inning, but the Bruins shut the Taft rally down quickly as the Bruins scored five runs in the seventh inning. The Bruin offense put the game away in the seventh inning led by Adam Shew, Jon Kleespies, and Andrew Burger, all knocking in runs in the inning.

Shew was the winning pitcher for BHHS Bruins Baseball. He went five and a third innings, allowing four runs on four hits and striking out eight. Roman Worthey threw one and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen in the 11-4 Bruin win.

Talking with Coach Wallin after the game he made it clear that “We had nothing but respect for the Taft program, the have a tradition of playing deep into the play-offs. The team was eager for the challenge…Emotions were high, the energy was amazing in an incredible environment. Taft has a great ballpark with great fans. I think we learned we can play with anyone and we will continue to push ourselves to get better, and not be complacent.”
