Bruin Girls Can’t Keep Up with the Lady Honkers

With Bruin girls basketball head coach Kara Miller still recovering from an injury suffered over the holiday break, interim head coach Kyla Babich lead the Bruin girls onto the floor to take on the Lakeview Lady Honkers Friday night.

Junior guard, #21, Jaden Palmerin, starting the Bruin girls offense.

With both teams looking to get their first win, the Bruin girls came out with a lot of energy, pressing on the Honker inbound and capitalizing on mistakes to take an early 5-3 lead. Sophomore Ella Reneau led the way early for the Bruin girls with 5 of the Bruin girls 12 points in the period as the Lady Honkers used the Bruin girls high energy to get to the line for three of their 12  points to keep the game tied after the first period.

Junior point guard, Amelia Bruce, hitting the 3 pointer.

The Bruin girls couldn’t slow the Lady Honkers in the second period as Lakeview put five girls in the scorebook with three of those scorers hitting 3 pointers in the period. Even though the Bruin girls led 16-15 midway through the second period, the Lady Honkers three pointing created a sizeable lead as they held the Bruin girls offense to just 9 points in the quarter, as Lakeview put up 17 to take a 21-29 lead to the locker room.

#12, Sophia Bauer, driving to the basket for 2 of her 6 points in the game.

The third period became a foul fest as referees made it about themselves sending both teams to foul line 18 times combined as the Bruin girls closed the gap to just 5 points after getting to the free throw line 12 times, going 7 for 12. The Lady Honkers hit for 5 points from the floor and hit 6 free throws as both teams scored 11 points in the third with the Lady Honkers holding on to a 5 point 32-37 lead going into the final period.

Sophomore, Johanna Larson, #23, taking the foul on her way to the basket.

The Lady Honkers forced the Bruin girls to play catch up in the fourth period, but the Bruin girls offense went cold late,  scoring only 3 points in the final period as the Lady Honkers filled passing lanes and hit their lay-ups off of break aways and their free throws for 10 points in the period to hold on after a late Bruin girls rally to take the 35-49 win.

Junior guard, Jaden Babb, #3, hitting one of her two 3 pointers on the night.

The Bruin girls will be on the road Tuesday, traveling to Medford to challenge the St. Mary’s Lady Crusaders coming off a Friday evening loss to Rogue River, with tip-off scheduled for 7:00pm.
