Bruins to Ride Win into Friday’s Contest with 4-0 Marshfield

The Brookings-Harbor varsity boys basketball team stepped onto the hardwood Tuesday night at the home of the South Umpqua Lancers looking to rebound from a tough loss last Friday night against the North Bend Bulldogs. The 2-1 Bruins needed to come out with purpose and determination Tuesday night and that’s just what they did.

Junior guard Brig Schofield started all scoring with 3 pointer setting the pace for the Bruins out of the gate. The Bruins ran up an 8-0 lead before allowing the Lancers to get in the scoring column. Brig Schofield led the Bruin scorers with 5 points in the first quarter, junior guard #3 Eli Mills hit a 3 point shot and junior center Jon Kleespies #20 hit an inside basket and a free throw for his 3 points in the first period. The Bruins broke out for 15 points in the period.

The Bruins defense also played a role early as the Bruins started the period with a soft man press picking the Lancer offense up mid-way in the South Umpqua side of the court. This put pressure on the Lancer offense early and forced turnovers and bad passes by South Umpqua. The Bruin defense allowed only 6 points from 2 shooters in the period and took a 15-6 lead after the first period.

The second period again was led by Brig Schofield who hit 2 baskets in the period. Junior guard Austin Fronckowiak #2 hit a 3 pointer and junior guard Luke Beaman hit a basket and got to the free throw line hitting 1 of 2. The Bruins put 10 points up in the second period, and even though the Bruins were outscored 10-13 in the period, they would take a 25-19 lead into the halftime break.

After the halftime break, the Bruins came out a little off and struggled to back into the game. Coach Gonzales took the opportunity to wake up the Bruins with some tough defense, pressuring the Lancers into bad decisions and turnovers. Junior guard Luke Beaman took over scoring in the period hitting four baskets in the period leading Bruins scoring with 8 points in the period. Brig Schofield added a bucket and Jon Kleespies got to the line hitting 1 of 2 free throws. The Bruins scored 11 points and held the Lancers to just 9 points in the period.

In the fourth period, the Bruin defense again limited South Umpqua to just 9 points, but the Bruins Austin Fronckowiak would match the Lancers 9 point total by his self with a 3 pointer, a basket and 3 free throws in the period. Center Jon Kleespies, who ran into early foul trouble and spent much of the game on the bench, felt free to take some chances under the basket and took control of the paint scoring twice for four points in the period.

Talking with Coach Gonzales after the game, he said “We played good defense tonight. Played hard and played together. Offensively we were very erratic. We looked good at times and then would miss easy shots or have an unforced turnover. Too many empty possessions…Austin played well, and we played well defensively as a group”.

Luke Beaman led all scorers on the night with 14 points on 6-13 shooting, 3 rebounds, 1 steal and went 2-5 from the line. Austin Fronckowiak followed Beaman with 13 total points on 3 for 7 shooting, two 3 pointers, 3 rebounds, 1 blocked shot and shot and a perfect 3 for 3 from the line. Brig Schofield wasn’t far behind with 11 points in the game on 4 for 7 shooting, a 3 pointer, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, and shot 2 for 2 from the line. Jon Kleespies hit for 8 points on 3 for 5 shooting from the floor, grabbing 7 rebounds, a steal and 1 blocked shot while hitting 2 for 4 from the free throw line.

The Bruins will be home at Bruins Arena this Friday night as they match up in a must-win game against undefeated 4-0 Marshfield at 7:30 pm.
