City of Brookings Responds to NOAA Weather Warning

Due to an advisory issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) today that heavy rains and high winds are expected on the coast beginning Tuesday night, the City of Brookings is making sandbags available for home and business protection in flood-prone areas within the City.

In order to receive the sandbags, residents should call Police Dispatch at (541) 469-3118, and press zero (0) when the message begins. Dispatch will direct residents regarding how to obtain the sandbags.

Additionally, residents are being asked to secure yard debris and other materials in preparation for the major storm event expected to continue for several days.

“We are anticipating significant wind and rain,” City Manager Gary Milliman said, “and are asking residents to please secure any yard waste bags and other debris to prevent these materials from entering and clogging the City’s drainage system.”

“Public Works staff will be working overtime throughout the event and will be extremely busy monitoring and clearing drainage systems in an effort to prohibit large quantities of debris entering the system,” Milliman said.

Anyone observing debris, bags or other materials in a drainage ditch, or flooding of any kind, should call (541) 469-3118, and press zero (0) when the message begins to notify Police Dispatch. Dispatch will contact the appropriate public works or emergency service personnel to respond.
