Lady Bruins Remain Perfect with Big Game Looming

On Tuesday night the Lady Bruins traveled to the home of the 1-2 South Umpqua Lancers. The Lady Bruins sitting on a 3-0 record walked into the gym with something to protect and started quickly.

Senior guard Abby Farmer #00 started off all scoring in the game hitting two 3 pointers within minutes of the tip-off. The Lady Bruins jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back. After Farmer’s two 3 pointers, freshman forward Lexi Schofield hit a 3 point shot of her own and junior guard Mickey Fulton #2 and sophomore guard Avana Pettus #10 both got to the line each hitting 1 of 2 from the line.

The signature 2-3 man defense of the Lady Bruins frustrated the Lancers from the tip-off creating fast break opportunities and lay-ups as the Lady Bruins took an 11-9 lead into the second quarter of play.

The second quarter was full of defense and turnovers. Both teams struggled to score in the period, however Abby Farmer hit 3 baskets in the quarter with one of them being a 3 pointer. Lexi Schofield hit for a bucket as the Lady Bruins could only muster 9 points in the period. However, the Lady Bruins defense held the Lancers to just 5 points from one South Umpqua player.

The Lady Bruins took a 20-14 lead into the locker room at the halftime break.

The second half of play was a much closer affair. the Lady Bruins showed good ball movement off of turnovers and fast breaks but the Lady Bruins just could not pull away from South Umpqua. The Lady Bruins hit for 12 points in the period as the Lancers put 10 points on the board as the Lady Bruins added to their lead 32-24 after 3 periods.

Abby Farmer went 8 for 8 from the line in the fourth period putting 10 points on the board. Lexi Schofield hit her 2 free throws and a basket as senior center Brianna Humphrey #4 and sophomore guard Avana Pettus #10 both hit a bucket in the 19 point Lady Bruins fourth period putting the Lancers away 51-34.
After the game Coach Schofield said ” It was a good win. The girls kept getting better defensively. Abby and Lexi carried us offensively, but we got really good minutes out of all of our kids”.
