COVID-19 Continues with Seniors Next in Line for Vaccine

COVID-19 infection rates continue to ease in Oregon, and according to Oregon Governor Kate Brown’s COVID-19 weekly update, Oregon holds the third lowest infection rate in the nation with now 152,000 cases. Hospitalizations remained steady adding 218 individuals requiring hospitalization in the past week in the state of Oregon bringing the statewide total to 8,403. 55 individuals succumbed to COVID-19 in the past week, making the total deaths 2,149 for the entire state of Oregon.

Vaccinations continue to see distribution issues, however, Governor Kate Brown stated in her update, that after Oregon prioritized educators, staff and prisoners ahead of it’s elderly population,  Oregon “remains on schedule to open vaccinations to people 70 and older on Monday, February 22nd, and to people 65 and older on Monday, March 1st.”

In her statement, Governor Brown went on to say that Oregon continues to increase student in person school attendance with now more than 131,000 students back in the classroom. The 131,000 students is double the amount of students attending in school instruction eight weeks ago, and represents 20% of all Oregon’s student population.

Curry County’s latest numbers as reported Friday by the Oregon Health Authority, February 19th, now reports testing 8,155 individuals with 7,845 negative tests, 310 total positive COVID-19 tests and after adding 18 new cases in the last week has recorded 386 total cases and now 6 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

Del Norte County Department of Health and Human Services reported testing 12,852 with 11,897 negative results, 36 active cases and 955 total confirmed cases reported by Public Health, with 1 current hospitalization and now 5 deaths.

Coos County to the north, reported testing 31,066 individuals last week with now 1,362 total positive cases and 18 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

Josephine County reports testing 45,085 individuals with 42,973 negative results, 2112 total positive cases of COVID-19 and now 48 deaths.

Humboldt County to the south of Del Norte County reports 3,067 total cases after testing 71,376 individuals with 68,309 negative results, 125 active cases, 2,907 recoveries, 130 hospitalizations, and 32 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic as of Friday, February 19th.

Jackson County continues to see significant increases after testing 169,535 individuals with 159,350 negative test results, 8,078 total cases of COVID-19 with now 107 deaths as of Friday, February 19th.
