Crab Season Opens with Delays South of Coos Bay

Dungeness Crab season is set to open after rough seas delayed test results. Tri-State test results came in just above minimum meat recovery rates to be met in each test area are 23% north of Cascade Head (no rounding allowed) and 25% south of Cascade Head.

All areas in the Tri-State regions north of Cape Arago, Oregon have met the respective minimum meat recovery criteria, while multiple areas south of Cape Arago have not.

Therefore, after completion of the third round of testing under the Tri-State Protocol, the area from Cape Arago south to Gold Beach currently are below meat quality criteria and remain closed.

The area from Cape Blanco to the Oregon/California border will also remain closed due to persistent domoic acid detected in the viscera of crab.

Based on these meat recovery results, and in consultation with the Oregon commercial crab
industry and California and Washington fishery managers, will be opening the ocean
commercial Dungeness crab season north of Cape Arago to the OR/WA border. Commercial Crabbers north of Coos Bay will be allowed to start setting gear at 8:00 am Tuesday, January 1st, and the pulling of gear Friday, January 4th.
