Del Norte High School Gunfire Incident Determined to be Fireworks

On Tuesday, January 18th, the Crescent City Police School Resource Office received a report of a gun shot by the area of the pond at Del Norte High School.  

Safety protocols for the area were immediately initiated and with a Crescent City Police School Resource Officer on scene in less than one minute, Officers began searching the area for any threat or evidence of an actual gun shot.  

After canvassing the area and speaking with staff who were in the area, it was determined that there was no known threat and that no further safety protocols were needed. With no evidence of a gun shot actually taking place at that time, an investigation as to the source of the initial report, the Crescent City Police continued to maintain direct contact with school officials.   

On Friday, January 21st, a Crescent City Police School Resource Officer was able to view surveillance footage from the area and identified two students from previous contacts and with members of the Del Norte County Probation Department, located the juveniles.  

During the contact fireworks were located and other witnesses were also contacted who confirmed that it was a firework that was lit off on Tuesday, January 18th, and not a gunshot.    

The juveniles were lodged in juvenile hall for unrelated issues to the original incident.
