Four Rescued After Becoming Stuck in the Snow and Spending the Night in Their Vehicles

Early Sunday morning, February 26th,  Curry County Sheriff’s Dispatch received a 911 call from a Brookings resident at about 6:00am, who reported that he had received a call from friends saying they were stuck in the snow up off Hazel Camp Road, at a place locally known as the Gold Fish Pond, about twenty miles east of Gardiner Ridge and east of Brookings.

The caller stated that there were four individuals with two vehicles involved and that they had spent the night in their vehicles after becoming stuck in the snow when their vehicle slid off the road.

The caller stated that the four individuals had enough gas to run the car heaters to stay warm during the night but not enough gas to make it out due to the heavy snow fall.

The Search and Rescue Coordinator, who was with the Search and Rescue team doing overnight survival training, was contacted by Curry County Sheriff’s Dispatch and three Search and Rescue members, who were also all at the training, loaded up the SnoCat and headed for the stranded subjects.

At about 11:15am, the Search and Rescue team located the four stranded subjects and their vehicles.

All four Brooking’s residents, and their dog, were given a ride back out of the area in the SnoCat.
