Head On Collision Closes Highway

On Saturday, December 29, 2018, just after 9:30 am, the Oregon State Police and emergency personnel responded to a two-vehicle crash on Hwy 238 at Torrey Pines.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a Subaru Forester, operated by 34-year-old Eric Maddox of Grants Pass, swerved to avoid a deer crossing the road. The Subaru left its lane, over corrected, and entered the opposing lane of traffic. The Subaru collided with an oncoming Ford Ranger, operated by 63-year old Robert Culton of Williams, OR.

63-year old Robert Culton was transported, by ambulance to Three Rivers Community Hospital with serious injuries while 34-year-old Eric Maddox sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Hwy 238 was closed for approximately 2 hours, and at 11:30, vehicles involved had been removed from the roadway. A dead deer was located at the scene and is suspected to be involved, however, the Oregon State Police is currently investigating the exact cause.

OSP was assisted by the Josephine County Sheriff’s Department, Josephine County Rural Metro Fire, and Oregon Department of Transportation.
