Heavy Rain Dramatically Raises Water Levels, Closes Hwy. 101, With More on the Way

Heavy rain has saturated southern Oregon and northern California for over 48 hours leaving more than 4 inches of rain and in some cases considerably more at some locations.

CalTrans was forced to close Hwy. 101 at Last Chance Grade Sunday morning due to an active slide. Hwy. 101 was reopened to to one-way controlled traffic early Sunday afternoon just before 12:30pm.

Local Rivers have shown dramatic increases in water levels, however, with the exception of observations on the Coquille River appear to forecast the Coquille River incur minor flooding Monday, December 4th.

Smith River, at Dr. Fine Bridge, also appears to have crested just above ‘action’ levels Sunday at just over 27 ft., with flood level at 33 ft., however, most of the areas major rivers are well under flood stage.

Another 2 to 4 inches of rain are forecast to accumulate through Thursday, December 7th.
