High School Athlete Collapses – OHA Revises Sports Mask Mandate

Days after an Oregon high school athlete collapsed from what her coach referred to as “oxygen debt” while crossing the finish line in a school record time for the 800 meter, the Oregon Health Authority changed its statewide mask requirements for a specific segment of student athletes.

In a statement released Monday, April 26th, the Oregon Health Authority has revised its mask mandate regarding an athlete that is “outdoor, competing in a non-contact sport and is at least six (6) feet of distance from individuals outside of their household.”

“Non-contact sports” means sports where participants have no close contact with any other individual while participating in the sport. Non-contact sports include but are not limited to tennis, swimming, cross-country, track and field, sideline/no-contact cheer and dance.

Athletes will still be required to adhere to masking and distancing protocols before and after competing, as well as while training and conditioning for these sports or for competitions.
