Bruin Boys Continue to Power through Competition with Another Win

The 6-0 BHHS Bruin baseball team traveled to Myrtle Creek Tuesday to take on the 5-1 South Umpqua Lancers who were coming off of their first loss after splitting a double header against the Douglas Trojans Friday.

The Bruins opened the first in the batters box and struck out in order after 15 Lancer pitches. Bruin coach Keith Wallin handed the ball to senior Adam Shew #13 to take the mound for Bruins, and Shew answered in kind, striking out the first three Lancer batters swinging, in order, on 14 pitches.

Kyle Burger got the first hit of the game for the Bruins after Andrew Burger was put on base when he was hit by a Lancer pitch. But the Bruins could not capitalize with a runner in scoring position after the Lancer pitcher went on to strike out the side.

Shew gave up his first hit on his first pitch in the bottom of the 2nd inning, and then struck out the side on 14 pitches. The Bruin offense then put their lead-off batter in the top of the 3rd on base with a single to right, and then scored the first run of the game on a Jacub McCollum bases loaded walk putting the Bruins up 1-0 after three.

The Bruins would add 2 more making it 3-0 going into the Lancer half of the 4th, and Shew sat 3 more Lancer batters down in 8 pitches, and in order, after the second Bruin error put the second Lancer baserunner on base.

In the bottom of the 6th, the Lancers put another runner on the basepaths after a 3rd strike passed ball, and would then score that run off a double. That, and a sacrifice fly ball two batters later would be the entirety of the Lancer scoring making the score 5-2 going into the top of the 7th.

After seeing three Lancer pitchers, the Bruins would add 4 runs in the top of the 7th, putting together 3 walks, 3 singles and a sacrifice fly to end the game 9-2. Bruin senior right-hander, Adam Shew #13, went 6 and 2/3’s, striking out 15 Lancer batters.

The Bruins will host the Lancers Friday in a double header to decide the season series between the now 7-0 Bruins and the 5-2 South Umpqua Lancers.
