Hugo Fire North of Grants Pass Declared a “Conflagration”

On Sunday evening, September 2nd, a wildland fire was reported along Hugo Rd. just north of Grants Pass. Within 24 hours, as of 7:00 pm, the fire had grown to over 250 acres with just 15% containment. The fire threatened hundreds of structures and homes. Within hours, Governor Brown declared the blaze a ‘conflagration’ allowing resources to flow into the area just a few miles east of the Taylor Creek fire.

Local crews that worked all night protecting structures were relieved by 3 task forces deployed by order of the Governor as part of the Conflagration Act. Several hundred homes in the immediate area were threatened, and many residents were forced to evacuate. A Level 3 (GO) evacuation order and roadblocks remain in place until further notice.

Of the 265 structures threatened last night, two homes and 13 outbuildings were lost. Three additional residences and two outbuildings were damaged. Numerous vehicles, ATV’s and RV’s were also damaged or destroyed. 663 civilians were evacuated, but no civilian injuries were reported.

As of late Monday evening, the size of the fire has been re-mapped at 200 acres and is 30% contained. The cause remains under investigation.
