Thursday afternoon saw the Lady Bruin varsity soccer team show the league that they are a force to be reckoned with.

The Coquille/Myrtle Point Red Devils came onto the Bruins home field boasting a 3-1 overall record only to see the Lady Bruins literally run away with the game from the start.

Just 2 minutes into the game, #10 sophomore forward Avana Pettus, broke through the Red Devils offside trap, raced to the goal and scored, stunning the Red Devil defense. Brookings-Harbor would not look back, and would never trail in the game.

A stingy defense led by Senior Captain #18 Abby Farmer, would not allow the confident Red Devils to get organized, but it was the stellar play of goalkeeper Annie Nation that truly led the defensive stand. Nation would deny all shots that came her way and 5 of them in spectacular fashion.

However, you don’t win games if you don’t score goals and it was the seemingly unstoppable speed of forward Avana Pettus that ruled the offensive day. She would record a hat trick just 5 minutes into the second half. Pettus would go on to score a total of 4 goals in the game with her final goal coming after senior Stephanie Birks found the back of the net on her own breakaway with 21 minutes left to play.

The Lady Bruins will take their 2-0 league record into the home of the North Bend Bulldogs next Tuesday, September 26th, who also boast a 2-0 record in a game that will leave one of them undefeated in league play.
