Logging Truck Rolls Over Trapping Driver

Just after 9:30 am Friday morning, the Curry County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 transfer call through the Brookings Police Department reporting a loaded log truck had crashed about one mile up Gardner Ridge Road about eight miles east of Brookings, and that the driver was pinned inside.

Deputies responded along with the Brookings Fire Department, Cal Ore Life Flight and Reach Air Ambulance. Members of local logging crews and heavy equipment were also on scene to assist with helping first responders getting the driver, later identified as forty seven-year-old Brandon Campbell of Brookings, out of the smashed cab.

Campbell was operating the log truck downhill and apparently lost control on a corner, rolling the truck over on its passenger side striking a large tree, which kept if from going any further over the embankment. The load of logs dislodged from the truck and trailer as well. The cab was considerably damaged from striking the tree which pinned Campbell inside.

First responders worked for almost two hours trying to cut away parts of the smashed cab to get Campbell out. Once they were able to get Campbell out, he was then transported by ground ambulance to a field below and then flown from there to a Grants Pass Hospital. Campbell was alert and coherent and family members were notified.

Campbell worked for James Crook and the truck belonged to Crook. It was an amazing effort by first responders and the logging crews getting Campbell out of the truck Sheriff John Ward commented later.
