Man Barricades Himself in Motel after Hwy. 101 High Speed Chase

On Saturday morning just before 10:00 am, a man suspected of an armed robbery barricaded himself inside the lobby of the Crescent Beach Motel just south of Crescent City.

According to reports from the California Highway Patrol, the Del Norte County Sherrif’s Office, and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began when the suspect, armed with a firearm, robbed the gas station at the Blue Lake Casino just outside of Arcata California.

The suspect then carjacked a vehicle. The subject was contacted in that vehicle by Blue Lake Casino Security before ultimately entering north on Highway 101. After the vehicle was spotted by a Yurok Police officer, the CHP and Del Norte County Sheriff’s office identified the vehicle, beginning a high-speed chase north on Hwy. 101.

Officers deployed spike strips on Hwy. 101 just south of Crescent City ending the vehicle chase. The suspect exited his vehicle and barricaded himself in the Crescent Beach Motel where a stand-off ensued. The CHP then closed Hwy. 101 in both directions diverting traffic for more than 6 hours Saturday afternoon.

Authorities introduced incident negotiators to the scene and several hours passed before entering the motel and ending the situation shortly before 3:00 pm Saturday afternoon. No injuries were reported.
