Monday’s Strong 6.2 Magnitude Quake South of Eureka followed by Cluster of 30 More Aftershocks

After a strong 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck 45 miles southwest of Eureka, California at approximately 12:10pm Monday afternoon, reports of minor damage began to be reported regarding the the quake being felt as far south as South San Francisco, San Jose and Stockton California, throughout the San Joaquin Valley and north through Redding, Medford and Eugene, Oregon.

The initial quake registering 6.2 was followed by three smaller tremors registering 2.5 at 12:25pm, a 3.0 at 12.29pm and another 3.6 at 12:47pm and continued throughout the day adding approximately 30 additional tremors ranging from 2.5 in magnitude to a 4.5 near Ferndale, California, as the quakes clustered just south of Fortuna, California, from Rio Dell, Ferndale and Petrolia approximately 30 miles south of Eureka.

Earlier in the day, a 4.4 magnitude quake struck approximately 175 miles northwest of Coos Bay at 11:37pm.

The quake generated no immediate tsunami warnings, or tsunami waves but was felt as far away as Brookings, Oregon.
