Reports of Shots Fired Leads to Arrest

Early Friday evening, December 8th, numerous reports of shots being fired near Hwy. 101 and 8th St. in Gold Beach just before 7:30pm.

Officers were on scene within minutes and observed a male laying on the ground with another male standing near the La Casita De Oro Mexican restaurant as the Officer secured the scene before initiating a preliminary investigation.

It is believed that the victim was confronted by the suspect, later identified as 44 year old Steven P. Mason, in the drive-thru of the restaurant before both men exited their vehicles and met nearest to the suspects vehicle, before the suspect produced a handgun from his vehicle and pointed it at the victim.

The handgun discharged as a struggle for the weapon ensued before the suspect was incapacitated after being struck in the face by the victim.

Investigation determined that the Mason and the victim did not know each other prior to the Friday evenings incident.

Mason was arrested and booked into Curry County Jail on multiple charges including, Attempted Manslaughter, Assault, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

The incident remains under investigation.
