Sizeable Quake Rattles the Northern California Coast New Years Day

A moderately sizeable earthquake struck off the northern California coast New Years Day morning, Sunday, January 1st, initially measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale just after 10:35am.

The quake struck 30 miles south of Eureka and just over 9 miles outside Rio Dell, California. at a depth of approximately 9 miles.

The quake was preceded by a small 2.9 quake near Humboldt Hill just south of Eureka New Years Eve, just before  9:30pm Saturday evening.

No Tsunami or Tsunami warnings were generated by the quake.
