Barron’s Latest ‘Star Student Athlete’ Selection, Lexie Newman, Breaking New Ground

High school sports programs are now gearing up their Spring sports programs and another outstanding Brookings-Harbor High School student athlete has been chosen Barron’s ‘Star Student Athlete’. Student athletes are selected by their coach’s for their outstanding efforts in the sports arena, as well as their exemplary scholastic and community participation.  

This weeks selection is a first, freshman female wrestler Lexie Newman, who was chosen by head coach Marco Thorson for her dedication, determination and hard work that has led to her recently finishing 3rd at the state tournament after her first season of competition.

As a three sport varsity athlete, freshman Lexie Newman participated on the Bruins girls varsity soccer team, earned her way to captain on coach Marco Thorson’s varsity wrestling team and will lace up her track shoes and run for head coach Jason Fulton’s varsity track team this spring.    

In Lexi’s freshman debut for the Bruins wrestling team this year, Lexie placed First at each wrestling tournament she entered this year, including, the Crescent City Invitational, the Del Norte Classic, the Coquille Winter Kickoff, the Sutherlin Girls Tournament, the Siuslaw (Nick Lutz) Invitational, and the Rogue River Classic. She then placed 2nd at districts, and went on to defeat the girl she lost to in the finals at Districts to take 3rd place at state finals.

This weeks selection is another exceptional example of what Barron’s Star Student Athlete program is all about, excelling in all aspects of the ‘Star Student Athlete’ program showing leadership, competitiveness, and work ethic while balancing a 3.7 GPA. Scholastically Lexie has balanced her athletic participation while carrying a 3.7 GPA in college prep courses.

“Lexie works hard, putting herself in position to win, and has proven she can finish at the top going undefeated in regular season matches.” coach Thorson told the Compass. “As team captain, Lexie is a joy to coach and is a leader in our wrestling room. She has the dedication and determination to continue her athletic dreams on to the next level”.
