Brookings Police Dept. Arrests 18-year-old in July 11th Shooting Death of Teen

According to a press release issued just after noon,Wednesday, July 13th, by the Brookings Police Department, very early Monday morning, July 11th, a 9-1-1 call was received by Bookings Police Department regarding an individual lying in the roadway on Hemlock St. near Fern St.

Brookings Police officers arrived within minutes of receiving the call and found a deceased 16 year old young man in the roadway at the location.

The Major Crimes Team was immediately activated and investigators from the Curry County Sheriff’s Office, the Oregon State Police, and the Curry County District Attorney’s Office joined the Brookings Police Department and the Oregon State Police Crime Lab to begin an investigation at the scene.

After weeks of intensive investigation, the Brookings Police Department along with the Curry County District Attorney’s Office applied for and was granted an arrest warrant for Francisco Villegas-Lopez. This investigation stemmed from a shooting on Monday July 11th, where a 16-year-old male was killed. Villegas-Lopez’s exact whereabouts were unknown at the time.

On Thursday evening, July 28th, Villegas-Lopez was located while walking on 5th Street in Brookings, Oregon at about 7:46pm. Villegas-Lopez was taken into custody without incident and lodged in the Curry County Jail for the crime of Murder in the Second Degree.
