Bruin Girls Open Season with Decisive Win Over Rogue River in the Les Schwab Game of the Week

Junior, Emmy Armstrong, #10, went 4 innings, allowing 3 hits, and 1 run, striking out 3.

Brookings-Harbor varsity girls softball started league play Tuesday afternoon, as head coach Tony Baron and the Bruin girls hosted the Rogue River Lady Chieftains who made the trip from Grants Pass to start the season.

Senior, Ella Reneau, #5, starting the Bruin offense in the bottom of the 1st.

Coach Baron sent junior #10, Emmy Armstrong to the circle, looking to keep Rogue River runners off the base paths to give the Bruin girls offense an open inning head start, and Armstrong did just that, shutting down the Lady Chieftain offense allowing no runs. A determined Bruin girls offense stepped into the batters box and filling the basepaths with runners scoring three runs in the first.

Senior, Sahara Sankoh, #14, making the catch in left field.

Rogue River answered in the second, putting runners in scoring position and managing to get one runner across the plate. The Bruin girls bats struggled in the bottom of the second, leaving the score 3-1 Bruin girls, to close the second inning.

Junior, Lexi Peters, #1, starting the double play at shortstop.

Armstrong was strong again in the third, again keeping runners off the basepaths and letting her defense make the plays to keep the Lady Chieftains off the scoreboard. The Bruin girls offense took advantage of the Rogue River open inning and again put runners in scoring position and pushed three runs across the plate to take a 6-1 lead into the third.

Junior, Annika Steendahl, #8, squaring up a hit.

In the fourth, the Bruin girls took control of the game, shutting down the Rogue River offense for the second consecutive inning before the Bruin girls offense had their biggest inning, pushing five runs across the plate to take an 11-1 lead.

Freshman, Claire Austin, #3, placing the tag at third.

But the Lady Chieftains weren’t quite done yet, waking their bats up in the top of the innings and fighting to get two runs around the bags to close the gap to 11-3 before the Bruin girls offense answered with a run of their own.

Senior, Sienna Petersen, #2, making the out at 2nd.

Rogue River had no answer in the top of the sixth, failing to get another run across the plate. The Bruin girls would get another run across the plate in the bottom of the sixth, making the final score 13-3, ending the game.

The Bruin girls will take their 1-0 record on the road this Friday, traveling to Rogue River for a double-header to complete the series with first pitch at 4:00pm.
