Curry County Sheriff’s Office and Search and Rescue Team Up to Rescue Stranded Dog

The Curry County Sheriff’s Office received a call Thursday, March 2nd, reporting that a dog had been barking frantically for the past two hours and when the caller investigated further, he could see a dog stuck on the side of a steep bank above the Rogue River just up from the Huntley Park gravel bar.

A Patrol Sergeant drove to the area near Lucky Lodge on the north side of the Rogue River and advised that the dog appeared to be stranded in a location non-accessible by walking and would probably need a rope rescue. The dog was reported to be about fifteen feet above the edge of the river, and due to darkness, it was determined it was too dangerous to try the rescue by boat.

A call was placed to the Curry County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team and several members responded to the area. Search and Rescue members attempted to reach the dog from above but could only get to within about fifty feet and determined it was to dangerous for both Search and Rescue members and the dog.

It was decided that the best option would be to wait until daylight and attempt a rescue by boat.

Early Friday morning, March 3rd, the Sheriff, Curry County Sheriff’s Marine Deputy, and Search and Rescue members responded by boat to the location and were able to rescue the dog from his stranded position where the dog had spent the night.

The dog had a harness on with tags that gave a telephone number and the name of Rebel. Rebel was given a boat ride back to the port and his owners were contacted. When the owners arrived, they reported that Rebel had gotten loose the night before and apparently swam across the river.
