Elderly Man Attempts to Out Run Deputies after Alleged Car Theft

Late Sunday afternoon, August 27th, Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the Ferndale area regarding reports of a vehicle theft just before 4:30pm.

According to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, the victim, an acquaintance, reported that 80 year old Steven Foster Stiles, reportedly entered the victim’s home without consent while the victim was away. Stiles then reportedly stole a vehicle belonging to the victim.

While returning to the residence, the victim located Stiles and the vehicle prompting reporting the situation to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.

Stiles was located by the first deputy responding to the area before Stiles attempted to flee on foot approximately a quarter mile from the stolen vehicle’s location upon deputy contact.

Stiles attempted to elude deputies over a metal gate on a private road, however, he was quickly apprehended and transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where he was charged with vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting a peace officer.
