Injury Riddled Bruins Struggle Against Crusaders

The Brookings-Harbor Bruin varsity football team was on the road Friday night, traveling to Medford to take on the St. Mary’s Crusaders.

Conditions at game time were pretty good, no rain, a pristine turf field on a crisp Friday night under the lights at the kick-off.

The Crusaders would get on the board first, with 7:29 left in the first period after an eight yard run finished off a consistent drive to put St. Mary’s 0-6 early.

The Bruin defense would come up big multiple times in the first half of play, with two interceptions in the Crusader end-zone, killing Crusader drives. Senior Bruin defensive back Jo’Moria Beasley #1 recorded the first interception for a touch-back, and the other was made by sophomore linebacker Kyle Burger #14, who returned it to the 38 yard line.

But the St. Mary running game would prove to be too much, and after an offensive series punctuated by 2 flags and a long yardage situation, the Bruins fumbled the ball, turning the ball over to the Crusaders at the Bruin 28 yard line. St. Mary’s would put the ball in the end zone 21 seconds later, putting the Crusaders up 0-12 at the half.

After an unsuccessful Bruin offensive series to start the 3rd period, St. Mary’s would put together a long, 60 yard sustained drive that culminated in a 23 yard touchdown pass extending the Crusader lead to 0-20.

The sporadic Bruin offense had long runs from their spread option offense, mixed with some successful pass plays for long yardage from junior quarterback Eligh Newell #16, including a 35 yard pass completion to senior Bruin wide receiver Jo’Moria Beasley #1 into the corner of the end-zone for the only Bruins touchdown on the night.

The Wild Coast Compass talked with BHHS head coach Shaun Bavaro after the game and he told us…”Our kids battled all night. We had a lot of underclassman playing tonight, and we’re very happy with our young kids.” he said. I’m also very proud of senior captain Oggie Badger and junior Brad Russell their leadership so far up front with 3 freshman starting on the offensive line.”

“We moved the ball better tonight” he went on to say, “but had to many bad timing plays. Defense played a solid game, and as a staff, overall, we continue to see a lot of growth from these guys. Now we will focus in on a much improved Douglas team, last year was a nail bitter of a game, I think this year will be much the same. “
