Logging Truck Versus Sedan Sends 2 to Hospital

Just before 3:30am, Monday, July 22nd, Rural Metro Fire, AMR-Josephine County, Grants Pass Department of Public Safety, Caveman Towing Inc & Josephine County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash in the 700 Blk of Merlin Rd early this morning.

Rural Metro Fire Engine Company 7512 arrived at the location to find a 4-door sedan and a fully-loaded log truck blocking Merlin Road. The truck driver and passenger of the sedan were self-extricated, but the driver of the sedan was trapped inside the car.

The incident commander activated an extended extrication response that brought in an additional ambulance, GP Fire, Caveman Towing (to assist with vehicle movement) and a standby alert to the Mercy Flights helicopter based in Medford.

Firefighters worked for just under 1 hour to remove crushed vehicle components, including the roof of the car, to gain access to the driver. Ultimately, the final action was cutting the steering wheel in half to free the driver’s legs. Thankfully, both occupants of the sedan were transported by ground ambulance with non life-threatening injuries to Three Rivers Hospital.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the crash. Merlin Road was reopened at 5:00 am this morning.
