Man Dies after Attempting to Elude Authorities and Crashing in Cave Junction

At approximately 1:00pm on Saturday, July 16th, a Deputy from the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a motor vehicle on Rockydale Road in Cave Junction.

The vehicle began driving recklessly after speeding up in an attempt to elude law enforcement before the deputy terminated the pursuit in the interest of public safety.

The vehicle was found crashed through a power pole, fence and into trees on the roadside a short time later.

The 38-year-old male driver The sole occupant, identified as 38 year old James Scott Mattox was conscious but trapped inside the vehicle. Illinois Valley Fire, American Medical Response and Pacific Power responded to the scene and extricated the driver who was subsequently transported to Rogue Regional Hospital in Medford where he later died from his injuries.
