With the school year now complete, and the final results have all been entered, the final outstanding Brookings-Harbor High School student athlete has been chosen Barron’s ‘Star Student Athlete’. Student athletes are selected by their coach’s for their outstanding’ efforts in the sports arena, as well as their exemplary scholastic and community participation.

This weeks selection is #5, RJ Hendrix, a two sport athlete who played varsity soccer in the winter and who has been chosen by varsity baseball head coach Keith Wallin after working his way through coach Keith Wallin’s baseball program into starting catcher, which he has played for two years now.

Chosen by coach Wallin for his “growth, leadership and work ethic throughout his career”, coach Wallin told the Compass that “Being a catcher requires so much time and energy, and truly takes a toll on the body, but RJ just continued to show up and work hard.”

During the Bruin boys baseball season, RJ caught every game at the catcher position for the Bruins, while throwing out 26 runners caught stealing. He retained a .972 fielding percentage while hitting 246 walking 17 times with a .447 On Base Percentage/

While playing two varsity sports, RJ manages a 3.33 cumulative GPA in multiple college prep classes including, Business II, US History, Recreational Games & Sports, Business Mathematics w/Algebra, Language Arts III, Weight Training II and Marine Science.

“After graduation, my goal is to attend the college of Siskiyous” RJ told the Compass, “in pursuit of an advanced welding certification with the goal of then attending the Missouri Welding Institute seeking further certifications in the in the industrial construction fields.

“RJ has been an absolute rock for us the last several years.” coach Wallin said, “He has really grown as a young man and will always have a warm spot in this program. We are all very proud of everything he has accomplished and look forward to what’s ahead. – head coach Keith Wallin.
